I am going to a Hospice house to visit a dying man?

I really don't want to see him, (He is unconscious) so its not like he will know if im there, him and his wife have been long time friends but we don't see each other very often, so i want to visit with the wife and offer my condolences, Do you think it would be rude to tell her that i really don't want to see him in his condition, i want to remember him how i saw him when he was alive and well? What would you do or say?
