How has Germany's geography helped it's development?

Hi, my son is doing a research project over the summer and would love some help from anyone with some information. He needs to find newspaper articles on how Germany's geography has helped and/or affected it's development. Any help would be greatly appreciated or ideas of sites to visit. We have searched for days and cannot seem to come up with any relevant information. Thanks
